WASP2 - Lightning Data from the StrikeStar Network

WASP2 (Wide Area Storm Probe) from Astrogenic Systems. The lightning data shown here comes from the StrikeStar Network developed by Astrogenic Systems. StrikeStar a is client/server system, that triangulates data from multiple, standalone lightning detectors (including Sand Point Weather) to form a real-time lightning locator network with much better positional accuracy. Weather Underground also uses the data from StrikeStar for its display of lightning strikes.

WASP2 uses a color scheme starting with white for recent strikes to dark red for the oldest strikes to visualize the age of the lightning events that are plotted on the map. The color coding spans from 0 to 60 minutes in 10 minute intervals. In addition to the color scheme, the following symbols are used to indicate the type of lightning event that is being plotted on the map:

    +   Positive Cloud-Ground
    -   Negative Cloud-Ground
    O   Intra-cloud or unclassified

Strike plots older than 3 minutes will be plotted with the same symbols but where the symbols are of a slightly reduced size.
